一个显著的例子是Skype。在中国大陆访问skype.com网站，用户会被重定向到另一个网站skype.tom.com。该网站实际上属于Skype在中国大陆的合作伙伴——TOM集团。TOM版Skype软件从界面上看非常类似原版Skype，且用户未被告知访问的网站被重定向。然而，TOM版Skype服从中国大陆的信息审查制度。也就是说，用户所有的个人隐私数据、通话和聊天内容都会被过滤、被服务器记录、并受到政府安全部门的监视。
如果某网站同时满足以下条件，我们就认为该网站通过被重定向的方式，遭受信息屏蔽：
- 当用户从美国登录时，最终的URL网页请求（包含重定向之后的）指向的IP地址属于中国大陆之外的服务器。并且，
- 当用户从中国大陆登录时，最终的URL网页请求（包含重定向之后的）指向的IP地址属于放置在中国大陆的服务器。
