中国防火墙会重置含特定关键字的网站请求连接。上图是
DNS即域名系统。这是一个全球性网络系统，能把域名（例如： domain.com）映射为IP地址（例如： 1.2.3.4）。DNS污染是指对域名系统的刻意干扰，使域名指向不正确的IP地址。发生这种状况时，用户无法访问目标网站，或者被重定向到某个不同的网站。DNS查询会根据查询请求来源国家的不同，而返回不同的IP地址。这种状况已经有合理的解释。因此，目前为止，本站无法判断某个网站是否受到跟网络审查有关的DNS污染，我们只能断定某网站没有受到DNS 污染，如果满足：在美国访问时，主机域名指向某个IP 地址，同时在中国访问时，主机域名指向同一个IP地址。如果域名指向不同的IP 地址，该网站有可能受到DNS污染。网站是否被dns污染，还有其他判断标准，如连接被重置，访问超时等。 
一个显著的例子是Skype。在中国大陆访问skype.com网站，用户会被重定向到另一个网站skype.tom.com。该网站实际上属于Skype在中国大陆的合作伙伴——TOM集团。TOM版Skype软件从界面上看非常类似原版Skype，且用户未被告知访问的网站被重定向。然而，TOM版Skype服从中国大陆的信息审查制度。也就是说，用户所有的个人隐私数据、通话和聊天内容都会被过滤、被服务器记录、并受到政府安全部门的监视。 如果某网站同时满足以下条件，我们就认为该网站通过被重定向的方式，遭受信息屏蔽：当用户从美国登录时，最终的URL网页请求（包含重定向之后的）指向的IP地址属于中国大陆之外的服务器。并且，当用户从中国大陆登录时，最终的URL网页请求（包含重定向之后的）指向的IP地址属于放置在中国大陆的服务器。 
中国政府要求所有服务器在中国大陆的网站都要实施自我审查。自我审查的形式多样，与监控外国网站相比，更加复杂，而且难以追踪。当用户在这些网站搜索特定关键字时，网页会显示某些信息，间接承认了自我审查的存在。例如百度，如上图所示，当用户搜索敏感的关键字时，网页会显示如下信息：根据相关法律法规和政策，部分搜索结果未予显示。然而，这并不意味着只有显示类似信息的搜索才受到监控。更合理的解释是显示类似警告信息的搜索所含的关键字特别敏感，相比其他搜索关键字，这类关键字受到更高层级的监控。若在某网站的内置搜索引擎搜索某关键字，而显示如下或类似的信息：根据相关法律法规和政策，部分搜索结果未予显示，则我们可以认为该网站实施自我审查。 
网络连接超时意味着用户的网站请求被中国防火墙（GFW）刻意干扰，无法得到目标网站的响应，从而无法加载目标网页。这时，浏览器会显示如下信息：网络连接超时。若没有翻墙（墙即GFW）工具，用户将无法判断这是网站服务器出现问题，还是GFW的干扰。因而，多数用户都把连接超时的问题归咎于目标网站自身。本站基于以下条件判断网站的连接超时是由GFW 所为：在美国访问目标网站，网站请求在15秒内得到服务器响应在中国访问目标网站，网站请求超过15秒无响应。 我们在2011年1月开始收集有关中国防火长城的信息，并建立网站 GreatFirewall.biz 公开发布这些信息。2011年10月，我们的域名改为 GreatFire.org。我们将继续努力，添加和改进各种被屏蔽的网站和搜索关键字等信息。建站初始，本站只对几百个网站进行测试，但现在，我们监测的网页地址已经超过10，000个。
Our data comes from the following sources:
1. User additions. Anyone can add a new URL for testing and it will be continuously tested by our system.
2. Collaboration with other projects. Any URL that's marked as blocked in China by these sources is automatically imported into our system: Autoproxy, China Digital Times and Herdict. Each keyword in our system - be it on on Baidu, Google, Weibo or Wikipedia - corresponds to a URL on that website which is tested for censorship similarly to how any other URL is tested. I wonder for what government this website is acting? Censorship in China is a particular object of maintaining stability and in order to develop its economic growth because of its historical and cultural features. it is indeed a developing country (so everything could not be perfect and can be perfect right now) with a very diverse cultural, religious and ethnic diversity (a billion and a half people!), but also because of its recent communist chapter. All countries in the world seeks to cultivate patriotism and stability in order to enrich and avoid the risk of civil war - can lead to an internal implosion and human massacres. Is this is what you want for China? and why do not you monitor the U.S.?

Do you seriously believe the combination of censorship and one-party rule is the formula for stability longer term?
