中国政府要求所有服务器在中国大陆的网站都要实施自我审查。自我审查的形式多样，与监控外国网站相比，更加复杂，而且难以追踪。当用户在这些网站搜索特定关键字时，网页会显示某些信息，间接承认了自我审查的存在。例如百度，如上图所示，当用户搜索敏感的关键字时，网页会显示如下信息：
根据相关法律法规和政策，部分搜索结果未予显示。
然而，这并不意味着只有显示类似信息的搜索才受到监控。更合理的解释是显示类似警告信息的搜索所含的关键字特别敏感，相比其他搜索关键字，这类关键字受到更高层级的监控。
若在某网站的内置搜索引擎搜索某关键字，而显示如下或类似的信息：根据相关法律法规和政策，部分搜索结果未予显示，则我们可以认为该网站实施自我审查。
